Domestic Violence Assessment and Treatment

Domestic violence, also called intimate partner violence (IPV), is a problem nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “About 41% of women and 26% of men experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime…” Wisconsin is not immune from this problem, especially in rural areas.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, there were 108 incidences of domestic violence in Richland County in 2018. The impact of domestic violence can be lifechanging for everyone involved, especially children. Decades of research shows that survivors and child witnesses of domestic violence are prone to mental health and substance use problems. Pine Counseling strives to work with area partners and agencies to identify, assess, and treat perpetrators of domestic violence.

Whether ordered as part of pre-sentencing or by a court or probation agent, our provider is one of two trained and certified providers in Richland County to complete assessments that meet the standards set forth by the State of Wisconsin’s judicial system. That standard, and the purpose of the assessment, is to determine the extent and severity of violence, the presence and extent of power and control, the level of risk for continued violence, and provide recommendations for risk-lowering measurers and effective treatment.

Referrals for evaluation can be made by calling (608) 383-1261, by fax at (608) 383-1348, or by email at clinic@pinecounselinginc.com. Individuals requiring assessment are also welcome to call or email to obtain an appointment, but the person/agency requiring the assessment should also contact the clinic to consult with the provider prior to the scheduled assessment. Payment for the assessment must be received by the day of the scheduled appointment.

What to Expect:

  1. A three-hour block of time is scheduled, which allows for completion of the following:
    • Intake paperwork and informed consent.
    • Screening instruments.
    • Assessment interview.
  2. Police reports/criminal complaints for each arrest for domestic violence are required in order to meet the standards of a valid assessment and must be submitted prior to the assessment date.
    • Reports can be obtained through the arresting police department or clerk of courts in the county of arrest.
    • If on community supervision, probation agents typically have the reports and can submit them if a release of information (ROI) is implemented with Pine Counseling.
  3. ROIs are completed during the intake process and includes any agencies, attorneys, and alleged victims involved.
  4. Once the assessment interview is completed, the required collateral information is collected based on the ROIs completed during the intake process.
  5. The turnaround for the completed written report is typically two to four weeks.
